Our Lifesaving Relocation Program
Our Hope on Wheels Transport Program moves at-risk dogs and cats from overtaxed, under-resourced Florida shelters to communities where eager adopters await. This program is an essential part of Furry Friends’ mission to help Florida reduce the number of in-shelter euthanasias, ensuring more pets get the second chances they deserve.
Why Relocation?
Across the country, there are quiet divides. In some communities, shelters are bursting at the seams, doing everything they can with limited space and staff. And just a few hours away, there are open kennels and families ready to adopt. It’s not for lack of heart on either side. It’s just location. And that’s where Hope on Wheels comes in.
At its core, Furry Friends Humane’s transport program is about so much more than moving dogs and cats from place to place. It’s a commitment to ensuring that an animal’s chance at a loving home is not limited by space or geography. By connecting overcrowded Florida shelters with communities eager to adopt, we create desperately needed second chances for pets who might otherwise be overlooked.

What sets Hope on Wheels apart from other transport programs?
Unlike other transport initiatives, Furry Friends Humane’s Hope on Wheels is a year-round, professionally staffed program, offered at no cost to sending or receiving shelters. Our program leverages our dedicated transport infrastructure, veterinary oversight, connections with like-minded organizations throughout the country, and experienced handlers to ensure every transport is safe, humane, and successful. Furry Friends’ Hope on Wheels provides a committed, flexible partnership for both sending and receiving shelters that is laser-focused on reducing euthanasia and increasing live release rates by connecting overburdened facilities with communities ready to adopt.
How does the transport program work?
Our transport program identifies animals at risk of euthanasia in overcrowded shelters and relocates them to adoption partners where space and opportunity are available. We work closely with shelter staff, rescue partners, and trained volunteers to coordinate every step—ensuring animals are health-checked, cleared for travel, and safely transported via ground. Once they arrive at their destination, they’re placed into foster or adoption programs where loving families are waiting. Every journey is carefully planned to prioritize animal welfare, reduce shelter overcrowding, and give each pet a real shot at a forever home.

Is transport stressful for the animals?
We do everything possible to make transport safe, comfortable, and low-stress for the animals. Each pet is given a thorough health check before traveling, and our experienced team uses climate-controlled vehicles, secure crates, and scheduled rest stops. We also limit the number of animals per trip to ensure plenty of space and attention. Most animals settle in quickly and arrive calm, safe, and ready for their second chance.
