Empower a Pet's Journey from Afar

Be a Virtual Ambassador: Advocate, Share, Transform Lives

A virtual ambassador is a volunteer that selects an animal (cat or dog) to promote. Virtual fosters come by the shelter during business hours and spends a little time getting to know the animal of their choosing.

We ask that you write a cute bio for your foster to help them get adopted. We also ask that virtual ambassadors take a couple of cute pictures and/or videos of their furry new friend to share with the world. We ask that you promote your virtual foster on your social media outlets, or make us content for ours!

Resources for Success

Many shelter animals remain unseen and overlooked, but with your help as a Virtual Ambassador, they can find the loving families they deserve. Your efforts can accelerate adoption rates, reduce the stress of shelter life, and ultimately save lives. By simply sharing their stories, you become a vital part of their journey to a new home.

Every share, like, and comment can bring these animals one step closer to their forever families. Your involvement is not just beneficial—it’s transformative.

How to Write a Great (and Positive) Bio

✏️ Bio Style Options:

  • First-person: Let the pet speak for themselves—fun and personal.
  • Third-person: Describe the pet like a story, highlighting likes/dislikes.
  • Interview-style: Ask playful Q&As and answer from the pet’s POV.

🧠 Start Strong: Craft the Intro

Your first 1–2 lines are everything—set the tone!
Make it witty, warm, or a little silly to draw the reader in.

📋 What to Include After the Intro:

  • Age
  • Weight
  • Breed
  • Special needs (if any)
  • Temperament / disposition
  • Type of home they need

💛 Stay Positive—Even About Challenges

Instead of:
“No kids under 12”
Try:
“I’m a lovable goofball who forgets how big I am—so I’d do best with older kiddos!”

Instead of:
“Not good with other dogs/cats”
Try:
“I prefer being your one and only—just me, you, and lots of couch time.”

Instead of:
“Very active”
Try:
“I’ve got championship fetch skills and love a good jog or adventure.”

Instead of:
“Lazy”
Try:
“If your idea of a great night is snacks, snuggles, and sitcoms—I’m your match.”

For special needs:
“She doesn’t know she’s different—she just knows she’s loved. All she needs is a little patience and a big heart.”

🌟 Highlight Who They Are, Not Just What They Are

  • Personality: Joyful, mellow, goofy, cuddly?
  • Attitude: Confident, curious, “don’t worry, be happy” vibe?
  • Lifestyle: Are they a hiking buddy, snuggle bug, or car ride enthusiast?

📸 Tell Their Story

Give a glimpse into their backstory. People love to know:

  • Where they came from
  • What they’ve overcome
  • What makes them unique

Great Starter Questions:

  • What makes you smile about this pet?
  • What’s their favorite toy or game?
  • Do they have a best friend?
  • What’s their ideal day?
  • What kind of home would be their dream match?
  • What strength or gift do they bring to a family?

Photography Tips

📸 Pet Photography Tips

  1. Go Outside (If You Can):
Photograph dogs outdoors in natural light—shade is best on sunny days. Let them explore first so they settle down before you start shooting.

  2. Use Your Voice:
Talk sweet and upbeat to dogs to help them feel relaxed and playful. For cats, use a soft, calm voice—too much excitement can spook them. Keep talking to help them focus and trust you.

  3. Take Your Time:
Spend 5–10 minutes with dogs and up to 15 minutes with cats. Giving them time to adjust makes for better, more natural photos.

  4. Show Your Face:
Don’t hide behind the camera—hold it lower so they can see your face. Use the screen to frame shots. This builds trust and reduces fear, especially with cats.

  5. Pick Great Backgrounds:
Avoid harsh lighting, white walls, kennels, or linoleum floors. Look for natural textures like brick, greenery, or simple clean walls. Keep it clutter-free so the pet is the focus.

  6. Skip the Flash:
Flash can scare animals and make photos harsh. Most basic cameras or phones work well in natural light—get to know your camera settings for better results without flash.

Marketing Tips

Create calling cards and flyers.

Calling cards and flyers are another way to showcase individual dogs and promote them for adoption. You can create calling cards yourself and print them out on card stock, available at office supply stores. On the cards (which can be about the size of a business card), include the dog’s photo, gender, age, shelter ID number, the name of shelter, the address, an email address, and a phone number. The cards can be handed out when volunteers are out in public with the dogs. You can also place the cards at the shelter reception area, plus carry them with you so you can hand them out wherever you go.

Social Media

Social media is a great way to showcase available animals!

  • Make frequent posts on each of your social media accounts—include info on how to adopt the animal and where to meet the animal.
  • Be responsive to comments from potential adopters and any messages sent to your social media platforms.
  • Try out all the tools on each platform—there are some innovative ways to reach and engage current and new followers.

Connect With Your Community

  • Through simple engagement boosters like @tagging and adding locations to posts. This helps create a broader reach for your content and establishes credibility for the organization.
  • Infuse humor! Laughter is a universal communicator and one of the key ways humans bond with one another. Being lighthearted and funny lets people know it’s ok to relax and can help them form positive associations with your mission, animals, and pet adoption as a whole. It’s endearing and breaks down barriers and stereotypes.
  • By telling stories. Real, raw emotion is motivational and makes a space for authentic connection. Remember to stick to the facts, and always maintain a tone of optimism and hope so your followers still feel useful, even with the sad or difficult stories.
